HISTORICAL WTCR WIN FOR PWR RACING

July 7, 2019

Behind the wheel of the PWR Racing CUPRA TCR was 23 year old Spanish Mikel Azcona. Both him and the team are now running fifth in the championship, ahead of multiple world champions and well established teams.

– This is a fantastic day for PWR Racing. The whole team is showing that we’re able to compete for victories in the absolute world top in touring car racing. Mikel drove fantastically and both him and the team truly deserves this victory. It’s the perfect way to enter the summer break, says Emil Axelsson, Team Principal at PWR Racing.

First WTCR win for PWR Racing

After a tough saturday where Mikel Azcona qualified P18 and finished P13 in the race and team mate Daniel Haglöf ended P25, things then turned around for sunday. Azcona made it to Q2 and qualified P8 while Haglöf had to settle for P25 following a broken driveshaft. Azcona then made the most of his strong qualifying performance, bringing his CUPRA TCR across the line as P1 in the second race of the weekend.

– I’m thrilled with this result! I wasn’t expecting to be standing here this early in our rookie season. It’s a fantastic feeling to take both my own and PWR Racings first WTCR win. It’s also great to grab the first CUPRA victory of the season. I’m so happy right now, let’s keep this up for the last part of the championship, says Mikel Azcona, PWR Racing driver.

Strong finish before the summer break

In the third race Azcona produced another stellar drive from P8 on the grid to P4 across the line, scoring valuable points in both the teams and drivers championship. Placing both him and PWR Racing fifth in the championship standings. Daniel Haglöf had a tough end to the weekend, finishing P22 in the second race and a DNF in the third.

– The car was great and during the weekend we improved the car. I was with more confidence today. We have a chance to win the championship. We need to continue in this pace. The championship is very long and we will see in Malaysia the position we have, says Mikel Azcona.
