I helgens tredje och avslutande race tog teamets juniorförare Mikel Azcona PWR Racings första WTCR-podium när han korsade mållinjen som trea. I samma race lyckades Daniel Haglöf manövrera sin CUPRA TCR från P18 till P10 vid målflagg. Team- och förarprestationer långt över någons förväntningar.
– Att gå ut under teamets första tävlingshelg i WTCR och prestera på den här nivån är grymt starkt. Jag är riktigt imponerad och stolt över allas presetationer, från förare till mekaniker och ingenjörer. Det finns såklart saker att slipa på, det här var vår första tävlingshelg i WTCR. Styrkebesked direkt
Helgens första kval bjöd på styrkebesked direkt. Daniel Haglöf kvalade P10 i ett fält där mindre än en sekund skiljde mellan P1 och P21 på det en 1:25 långa varvet. Teamkamraten Mikel Azcona var bara tiondelar bakom på P14. I första racet låg Haglöf länge med och slogs i tätgruppen när han på åttonde plats drabbades av en punktering och fick lov att gå i depå. Istället blev det Mikel som tog teamets första WTCR-poäng när han slutade P15.
– Jag lämnar helgen med positiv känsla trots missödet i första racet och problem under sista kvalet. Jag tycker att vi har visat att vi platsar på den här nivån och det känns sjukt kul. Vi kommer att jobba hårt för att fortsätta hålla hög nivå och klättra ytterligare. Vi har bara börjat, säger Daniel Haglöf.
Pallplats i WTCR-debuten
Under söndagen slog Mikel till direkt och kvalade P2 i Q1, P2 i Q2 och P5 under shootouten i Q3. En imponerande insats som komfortabelt placerade honom som bästa rookie. Daniel Haglöf kvalade P18, trots bromsproblem, i en session där åtta tiondelar skiljde mellan P1 och P23.
När det sedan var dags för race två och tre konverterade Mikel sitt fina kval till två starka poängplaceringar. En stark femteplats i race två och en ännu starkare tredjeplats sista racet. Daniel missade precis poängplats i race två när han slutade P16, men toppade sedan helgen med en stark uppkörning från P18 till P10 i sista racet.
I could not have dreamt of a better start to my WTCR season. I’m so impressed by the teams hard work and dedication to achieve this pace in our CUPRA TCRs. I’m already looking forward to the next race in Hungary. It’s a track where we’ve had the opportunity to make tests ahead of the race, compared to Marrakech where everything was new for me and the team. PWR Racing made entry into the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO this weekend. Straight from the get go the team made big steps. Big steps that evolved into huge strides during the course of the weekend. In the third and final race of the weekend Mikel Azcona made it on to the podium, finishing P3 in his and the teams WTCR debut. Meanwhile teammate Daniel Haglöf raced his CUPRA TCR from P18 on the grid to P10 at the chequered flag.
– To perform at this level during our first WTCR race weekend is very strong. I’m proud and impressed by everyone in the team. Mechanics, engineers and drivers have all been working very hard together. Of course there are things to improve, it’s our debut weekend in WTCR. But wow, a great performance, says Emil Axelsson, team principal at PWR Racing.
Strong performance
The first qualifying session of the weekend showed clear signs of the pace and performance of the PWR Racing CUPRAs. Daniel Haglöf qualified P10 on a grid that was separated by no more than one second from P1 to P21 on the 1:25 lap. Teammate Azcona was a few tenths behind and ended P14. The first race started off strong with Haglöf battling in the lead group, showing great pace when a slow puncture forced him to pit from P8 on track. Instead it was Azcona who grabbed the first WTCR point for PWR Racing, finishing P15 in his debut race.
– I’m leaving the first race feeling very positive despite the mishap in the first race and some brake issues in sundays qualifying. I believe that we’ve shown that we belong in WTCR. We will continue to work hard to improve and climb higher in the ranks. We’ve only just begun, says Daniel Haglöf, PWR Racing co-founder and WTCR driver.
Sunday podium for PWR Racing
Sunday started off with Azcona making it all the way to Q3, beating a handful of world champions along the way. P2 in Q1, P2 in Q2 and P5 in the Q3 shoot out. A super strong performance positioning him comfortably as the best rookie in the field. Daniel Haglöf qualified P18 in a extremely tight session where eight tenths was the difference between P1 and P23, despite managing a brake issue.
When it was time to go racing Azcona managed to convert his qualifying performance to two great results, finishing a strong fifth race two and an even stronger third in race three. Haglöf just missed the points ending P16 in race two. However, a strong third race race saw Haglöf manouvre his way from P18 to P10 across the line, grabbing his first WTCR points.
